What I Published in January 2024

I am a sucker for January. I love the promise it holds; the chilly-weather excuse it brings to stay in. I want to bundle up and hunker down and not worry about what I’m missing out on, because whatever I’m missing out on probably involves me getting out into the cold. I am also a sucker for warmth.
But January is slow. There can be a lot of anticipation and hurry to start the new year off “right,” only to sit around and wait for someone to tell you what to do. Budgets get approved in January. Big-picture plans get finalized in January. And editors can’t let their writers know what’s happening until all of this gets figured out. So, I take what I can get. I bide my time and relish in what I have on the docket, knowing that it is a privilege to work and write in this predictable slump. I also make plans for what I want to do for myself, which is always done with far too much coffee in my system and therefore can be way too ambitious — nevertheless, I don’t make adjustments. I like making big plans and seeing how things shake out. What’s the point of a fresh start if not to feel optimistic?
This January was 743 days long, and I enjoyed it. I made sure to get assignments done in time to go for walks on the beach, with just enough daylight to cover my path in salty pink air. If I have any goal for the year, it’s to cut work off early while still getting enough done. There’s something so nice about finishing before the day ends, with nothing but a cozy night ahead.
