What I Published in April 2024

I try not to get tripped up by the opportunity of longer days. As a freelancer, there never seems to be enough time in a 9-to-5 schedule, even if there aren’t as many meetings to go to and no colleague is asking for my thoughts on the latest news.

There has to be enough time to write and edit the assignment or two (or three) of the day, but then there’s the responsibility of pitching and interviewing and researching to fit in, too. Oftentimes these tasks can be split into a morning heap and an afternoon heap, but sometimes they happen all at once. And that’s not even including the process of sending and tracking invoices. Is this why I’ve been asked if I have an assistant?

So when the sun starts setting later, I can trick myself into thinking there’s more time. More time to work, more time to plan, more time to figure out the right word for that one thing in that place. But this spring, it seems like I’ve changed my tune. I’m resisting the urge to write later, or to fit in odds and ends on weekends. I’ll be honest and say that I don’t quite have a solid streak going, but significant progress has been made. The funny thing about writing and running a lil’ business is that the work can be neverending if I let it. But, truthfully, the work is better after I allow myself to stop.

By the way, have you picked up the latest and first-ever accessibility issue of Good Housekeeping, which is out now? I was its guest editor, and I also wrote an essay in the mix. I’m super proud of the work we did to bring this issue together!
