Chicago Field Guide: Where to Stay, Eat, and Go for a Perfect Weekend in the City
As the largest city between America’s two coasts, Chicago is the type of place where you can spend years getting to know its 77 close-knit communities and still feel like there’s more to explore. But what if you only have a weekend?
Although Chicago is expansive, it’s still possible to make the most of a short-term stay with a well-honed strategy. To spend a weekend in this city means finding a way to take in its historic architecture, fun-loving culture, and impressive food scene quickly like my friends and I did during a recent trip. Pack your bags and read on for where you need to stay, eat, and explore for the perfect weekend in Chicago.
The Best Place to Stay in Chicago
Chicago has many different communities, from Logan Square and Lincoln Park to Mount Greenwood and Hyde Park. But since you’ll only be in town for a short while, your best bet is likely to hunker down in the Loop — particularly if this is your first visit. This is where the city’s skyscrapers converge in a compact grid of steel and glass, and you’ll appreciate the area’s proximity to major landmarks as your hours in Chicago tick away.
When it comes to exactly where you should stay, check into the Pendry Chicago. Set inside the historic Carbide and Carbon Building on famed Michigan Avenue, the Pendry Chicago balances bygone charm with modern luxury as a stylish-meets-cozy hub amid all the action. Its 1929 Art Deco structure features a black granite exterior against gold and terracotta details, giving way to a sleek lobby of dark wood, leather, and warm light.
Start your weekend with a celebratory drink at the lobby bar before heading up to an equally inviting room of jewel-toned sophistication. Marble and metal complete the rich palette, which is softened by an enveloping bed topped with a chocolate square or two each night. The Pendry Chicago is a destination in itself, complete with a noir-inspired restaurant Venteux and an accompanying cafe illuminated by 40-foot windows.
To get a full lay of the land, take one of the gilded elevators to the rooftop restaurant for dinner with wraparound views, which is occasionally outfitted for limited-time events (like the speakeasy-inspired jazz performance we were lucky enough to see). You’ll want to curl up at the Pendry Chicago and never leave. But it’ll be a welcome sight after two jam-packed days beyond its doors.
Day One: Neighborhood Shopping, Tavern-Style Pizza, and a Baseball Game
We started our weekend in Bucktown, an artsy neighborhood known for boutique shopping, and ordered breakfast sandwiches with coffee at Allez Cafe. Next, we went to Eskell for a highly curated collection of home goods and clothes that resemble the living room and closet of the coolest girl you know. We then made our way to nearby Logan Square to shop for bright stationery at Festive Collective, smell fresh blooms next door at Fleur, and thrift for sartorial finds at El Dorado. Chicago champions small businesses, and this was our quick introduction into just how much this city has to offer from independent shops.
Recharge with a few slices of tavern-style pizza at Zarella, where we decided that a kale Caesar and mozzarella sticks are worth an order, too. But don’t get too full, because you need to save room for what comes next — like a hot dog, of course.
If it’s baseball season like it was during our weekend, spend the evening at a game. For us, the White Sox played prior to a fireworks show, which felt like a win, win regardless of how many home runs were scored. You can take the L from the stadium back to the Pendry Chicago, where the lobby bar will be waiting with a nightcap.
Day Two: First Lady Architecture Tour and Second City
Grab a seat or three at Venteux Cafe at the Pendry Chicago for breakfast, and then walk to your reservation at the First Lady architecture tour. As a family-owned company that’s been cruising the Chicago River and Lake Michigan for nearly a century, this guided tour has been heralded for its comprehensive-yet-casual approach to the past. We took in tidbits as we snapped photos, admiring just how stunning Chicago’s architecture is as it drifts by under the sun.
It made the most sense to stroll from the boat tour to one more must-see sight, the Bean inside Millennium Park, which is only a few blocks from the Pendry Chicago. Take it easy back at the hotel afterward, and then head to Cafe Ba-Ba-Reeba! for a late lunch of tapas and sangria. Feeling full and ever-so-slightly buzzed, we popped in and out of stores in Lincoln Park until it was time for a comedy sketch show at Second City.
You might want to call it a night after all that laughter, but there’s one more thing you should do: See the classic marquee at the Chicago Theater before walking back to the Pendry. You’ll have quite the recap to discuss with one more round at the lobby bar — cheers to a fun-filled weekend.
