The 5 Boring But Necessary Amazon Home Products I Swear By

As far as home products go, Amazon can be a blessing and a curse. There’s just so much to choose from, so much stuff, that it’s possible to scroll and scroll and scroll without feeling entirely confident that what you’ve chosen is actually what you need. Perhaps the opposite is also true: Since you’re routinely told to shop and buy online, it’s far too easy to end up with a bunch of things that never get your attention.

For the last several years, my day job has often put me in the position of shopping on Amazon in a professional capacity — you’ve likely seen the handful of picks that editors put together for any number of publications. Truthfully, wading through Amazon’s countless options on behalf of others is my ideal way to move through this site, since I feel a deeper responsibility to find real winners. But one thing I haven’t done for a publication is share my personal favorite “boring but necessary” Amazon purchases that keep my home humming. So let me get right to it below.

OXO Good Grips Bottle Brush

We’re all apparently drinking water from giant tumblers these days, no? I love having this brush on hand to give the trendiest thing in my kitchen — yes, I have a Stanley tumbler — a wash throughout the week. It dries overnight and fits perfectly in my utensil drawer, too.

Public Goods Walnut Scrubber Sponge

A sponge that's yellow on one side and brown on the other.

I have a fast-and-loose rule around home necessities that goes like this: If I’m bound to use something every day, then I want it to be functional and stylish. There are some things that can’t be pretty no matter what you do, and others that have some wiggle room. I like the look of these sponges and the fact that they can handle a mess without falling apart.

Command Broom and Mop Grippers

A comman gripper that has a white base for the wall and a gray collapsable "gripper" for the tool.

If there’s one piece of advice I’m routinely giving to fellow small-space dwellers, it’s this: Take stock of your vertical space. These reliable grippers capitalize on a blank wall in my laundry area, making it so I can store my mop and broom up and out of the way. You can also use them for kids’ toys, which I’ve done for my nephew.

OXO Good Grips Storage Container

A plastic container with a green strainer nestled inside.

Not a day goes by that I don’t reach for one of these storage containers, which has a built-in strainer for rinsing everything from blueberries and carrot sticks to cherry tomatoes and grapes. There’s an air vent on the lid that can be opened and shut when needed, and everything is dishwasher safe.

Small Laundry Basket

Typical laundry baskets are bulky, and wouldn’t fit anywhere in my home — and frankly, I didn’t want to always have a hamper on display! This small and collapsible laundry basket fits perfectly on top of my dryer, and comes in a pretty color. When I'm finished using it, it easily tucks out of sight.
