When it comes to trends, there are certain phrases that bubble up into the lexicon as in-the-know shorthand for a distinct look and feel. There’s “millennial pink,” of course, and “coastal grandmother,” which can immediately conjure up certain girlboss working spaces or Diane Keaton-inspired living rooms of the somewhat distant past and more recent present. 

And if you’ve been watching “Succession,” or at least scrolling past the frenzied coverage of Sofia Richie’s recent wedding, then you’ve probably heard the latest term to join those ranks: “quiet luxury.” 

For the unacquainted, pretend this definition is being told to you in a whisper, as that seems to be rather appropriate: Quiet luxury is when something appears to be a splurge — either because of the high quality of its materials or because it looks like it would be owned by someone with inherited wealth — but doesn’t immediately present as such. Quiet luxury has an understatedly elegant take on style, as if old-money muses like Grace Kelly or Jackie Kennedy planned a lunch outing in the TikTok era. In the realm of home decor, quiet luxury can mean living well with pieces that can be perceived as timeless.
