A 475-Square-Foot Garage Becomes a Flex Space for Homework and Fun

The storied Los Angeles neighborhood of Laurel Canyon is better known as a hub for 1960s musicians, not the garages where up-and-comers play. But designer Heather Taylor and her husband Alex de Cordoba were raising two young daughters in this hilly, compact enclave, and to put their problem in area-appropriate lyrics, their house was starting to not feel like a very, very, very fine house.

“We were instantly drawn to our home’s beautiful backyard and the coziness of its layout,” Heather says. “But as my girls grew, so did our need for more space.”
