Malibu, California, will always be one of those say-no-more locales that conjure up desire on first mention—perhaps especially in the dead of winter. The L.A. enclave is the embodiment of an endless summer, all simple natural beauty and effortless elegance. Which is perhaps reason number one that the area's buzzy Native Hotel has such instant appeal: Built in 1947 but renovated last year, it sits just beyond the curves of the Pacific Coast Highway on four quiet, sun-drenched acres of rolling Malibu land. There isn’t much to the 13-room getaway, and that was intentional. SKG Investments and the creative agency Folklore partnered on the property with the idea that its midcentury structure and seaside surroundings would look as good as ever with a few modern improvements. The goal was to create a “paradise lost,” where the hotel could be a haven for people looking to get away. Even if you’re not checking in anytime soon, there are three big takeaways to cop from the restoration, which successfully highlighted the original architecture and lent it a playful modern touch.
